No.4 of 2006  Marine Guidance Note 308 (M+F). Mooring, Towing or Hauling Equipment on all vessels - Safe installation and safe operation

The attention of port and River users is drawn to the publication by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, of Marine Guidance Note (MGN) 308 (M+F) January 2006

In addition to guidance on the general use and maintenance of mooring and towing equipment, the MGN addresses working with tugs and the dangers of bights of ropes and "Snap-Back" Zones.

MCA website:  (www.mcga.gov.uk)

Such guidance is of course of particular relevance in port marine operations, and the PLA's own Code of Practice for the Safe Mooring of Vessels on the Thames (2003) also addresses these important safety issues.

Copies of the Code of Practice for Safe Mooring, and other PLA marine guidance and regulatory publications are available from Mrs Andrea Chell at the address below, or may be viewed and/or downloaded from the PLA website at portoflondon.co.uk.
