Environment

The Port of London is set in an area recognised for its environmental importance, but with differing characteristics along its length. The wide expanses of mudflat of the Thames estuary are noted for their bird interest, with National, European and International conservation designations including Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Special Protection Areas (SPA), Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) and Ramsar sites. Upstream, the River Thames and its tributaries are designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) in recognition of the habitat provided for fish, birds and other flora and fauna.

The PLA is committed to take account of these environmental sensitivities in all its functions and this is enshrined in its Mission. Additionally, the PLA has developed an Environmental Policy, which includes strategic environmental objectives, and an Environmental Report.
